Blog: Treaty Day
October 1st, 2014
The Aboriginal Children’s Hurt and Healing Initiative or the ACHH Initiative, led by Dr. Margot Latimer of the Centre for Pediatric Pain Research and Sharon Rudderham of Eskasoni First Nation would like to acknowledge today as Treaty Day which marks the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia. The ACHH Initiative recently received funding to further explore the experience of pain and hurt for Aboriginal children and youth within the Mi’kma’ki and Welostoq territories (Atlantic Canada).
“Treaty Day, marks the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia as proclaimed in 1993 by then Premier John Savage and Mi’kmaq Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy. Its purpose is to promote public awareness about the Mi’kmaw culture and heritage for all citizens of Nova Scotia. A poster is produced and numerous events are organized throughout the month in recognition of Mi’kmaq History Month.”
