Leading international pain experts to visit Nova Scotia for three-day conference
Halifax, NS – Tuesday, October 1, 2013
This week, the International Forum on Pediatric Pain will host 150 researchers, physicians, clinicians, students, and health care professionals from over a dozen countries around the world for a 3-day interactive conference. This year’s scientific program focuses on the current trends in acute and procedural pain management in children.
“Despite 30 years of solid research showing the negative long term effects of poorly managed pain in children, children are still not getting the pain management for medical procedures they deserve,“ says Dr. Christine Chambers of the Centre for Pediatric Pain Research at the IWK Health Centre.
Invited speakers are leading experts in their fields and will discuss cutting edge research on a variety of topics, including individual differences in pain (Dr. Jeff Mogil), the long term effects of pain (Dr. Christiane Hermann), pain in infants (Dr. Rebeccah Slater), peri/postoperative pain management (Dr. Fiona Campbell), pain experienced in the emergency department (Dr. Ran Goldman), behavioural health and virtual reality (Dr. Jeff Gold), and information on changing pediatric pain practices (Dr. Bonnie Stevens). We’re also pleased to feature an interactive workshop using hypnosis to treat pain in children using a hypno-analgesic technique called the Magic Glove.
The International Forum on Pediatric Pain began in 1996, organized by Dr. Patrick McGrath and Dr. Allen Finley. Their goal was to create a multidisciplinary, stimulating, and educational workshop with researchers from around the world. Since then, each Forum organized by the Centre for Pediatric Pain Research has brought together the world’s best scientists and clinicians for lectures, interactive workshops, and peer-reviewed poster sessions.
The Centre for Pediatric Pain Research, at the IWK Health Centre and Dalhousie University, is an international leader in children’s pain research. The interdisciplinary research conducted by faculty, students and staff tackles many facets of children’s acute and chronic pain. The Centre is committed to conducting high-quality research on how to better understand, assess, and manage children’s pain and translating this research into improved practice.
