We are pleased to invite applications for the Dr. John T. Goodman Award for Trainee Research in Pediatric Pain & The “Pat Prize” for Outstanding Mentorship in Pediatric Pain!

Dr. John T. Goodman Award for Trainee Research in Pediatric Pain

This award has been developed to honour the mentoring of the late Dr. John T. Goodman of Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Goodman was the Director of the Department of Psychology at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, Canada for many years. He was a champion for research in this institution.

The prize is for a published paper in which the research was conducted while an undergraduate or graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, or equivalent (medical students, residents, and fellows shall be included). The paper must have been submitted within 2 years of the final degree or certification being completed. The paper must have been published in the 24 months prior to the nomination deadline and may be on any aspect of pediatric pain. Basic science, applied, and review papers are welcomed. The student must be the first author of the paper.

Nominations, including self-nominations are welcome. The nomination must include the published paper (papers that are accepted for publication may be submitted if accompanied by the letter accepting the paper) and a cover letter from the supervisor that: 1. details and attests to the training status of the first author; 2. describes the contribution of the student, and; 3. highlights the importance of the paper.

Decisions will be made by a committee appointed by the Integrated Vice President of Research of the IWK Health Centre and Capital District Health Authority.  If the committee deems that no submitted paper is appropriate, no award will be made. The decisions of the awards committee are final.

Decisions will be announced by May 31, 2015. The prize will consist of a cash award and a trophy that will be awarded at the International Forum on Pediatric Pain, October 1-4 in Nova Scotia, Canada (see: http://pediatric-pain.ca/ifpp). The cash prize is currently CAN $2000 plus a free registration at the International Forum on Pediatric Pain.

 

The “Pat Prize” for Outstanding Mentorship in Pediatric Pain

This award has been developed to honour the outstanding mentorship of Dr. Patrick McGrath.

Dr. McGrath is a clinical psychologist and scientist who has dedicated his career to studying pain in children; he is recognized as one of the world’s leaders in the study of children’s pain. He published the first book on pediatric pain in 1987 (with Dr. Anita Unruh) and founded the Centre for Pediatric Pain Research (with Dr. Allen Finley) at the IWK Health Centre and Dalhousie University in 1992. He is particularly known for his outstanding mentorship of trainees and junior faculty from various disciplines, and was the driving force and founding Principal Investigator of the highly successful Pain in Child Health (PICH) Strategic Training Initiative funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The first “Pat Prize” was given to Dr. McGrath at the October 2013 meeting of the International Forum on Pediatric Pain (IFPP), held at White Point Beach, Nova Scotia, Canada. A call for new nominations will be made in each year leading up to each IFPP meeting. The Prize will be given to a faculty member who has shown evidence of outstanding mentorship in the area of pediatric pain. This award is sponsored by the Centre for Pediatric Pain Research at the IWK Health Centre and advertised in conjunction with the John T. Goodman Award, which is given out in honour of an outstanding trainee research paper in the area of pediatric pain.

Nominations for mentors must be made by one or more former trainees or mentees in the form of a letter (maximum 4 pages) describing the nature and impact of mentorship provided by the nominee. See: http://pediatric-pain.ca/ifpp

Decisions will be made by an interdisciplinary committee appointed by Dr. Patrick McGrath or his designate, consisting of one additional faculty member and one trainee in the area of pediatric pain. If the committee deems that no suitable nomination has been made, no award will be made. The decisions of the awards committee are final.
